Summary:

Droid Builders as part of the Space Expo with the Columbia Space Center! We mingled with guests Saturday & Sunday taking about building droid, cosplay and all that fun stuff!

If interested in building, please visit the Build It webpage for links to the various resources available in the different builder groups!

As usual we had more droids & display on Saturday but overall we had a really decent booth with astromechs, BB8, WIP DI0, MSE droids, B1 battle droid and Jawa Prop. Also had a front row seat to the wrestling area where Rakishi was posted all weekend signing autographs. A really awesome Gonk even stopped by on Sunday to hang out.

The droid races were near disastrous for 24v RD-2D who smoked everyone on take off but almost face planted after overshooting the cone… eeee!! Mousers popped some parts and need repairs. Had several interviews including KTLA. Hopefully we get some droid builders out of it!

Meet the Star Wars Fan Groups Program @ Comic Con Museum

FAN GROUPS - visit the BUILD IT page for links to the different group pages etc. and learn how to become a member ! THEY ARE ALL FREE TO JOIN!

Representatives from the Droid Builders, Mandalorian Mercs, 501st Legion, Saber Guild and Rebel Legion Fan Groups had the awesome experience of leading panel discussion at the pop-up museum event for Comic Con this year! The museum was an incredible place with a perk of being filled with an awesome Batman exhibit. Unfortunately we were in such a hurry to hit the panel and hitch a ride back to the convention center we couldn’t explore — did see an awesome bat signal that I really need in my life haha

The fan group panel was super awesome. Best panel I’ve seen (participated in). Love hanging out with all the different clubs and working together. It adds so much diversity to a program as a unified group of Star Wars fans. Actually learned about how the clubs are the same & different, which is super beneficial as we often discuss it when mingling with fans and encourage joining of any and all clubs.

Some highlights was the uniqueness of the Saber Guild and Mandalorian Mercs in regards to costume customization freedom compared to the screen accurate requirements of the Rebel or 501st Legion. It is so interesting and awesome to have so much variety. Also awesome to learn is how the Saber Guild has practice weekly for their performances (something we haven’t been lucky enough to catch to date). So many great groups and awesome costumes available for anyone to build. Ardy Jo was repping the Droid Builders and didn’t crash and burn … so that was good. The droids added a nice touch to the panel we thought. Hopefully everyone gets some new recruits ! Ardy Jo is still finishing up a Rebel Legion Jawa and 501st Legion Inferno Squad …

  • Clubs are free to join

  • Most/all have mentoring groups etc. to provide support in joining and builds

SDCC2019 Museum Details:

Pop-up museum occurring all days of comic con 2019- no badges required and free admission. The Museum is is being converted from a 1935 Federal Building.

Preparations are underway to activate all three floors of the 68,000 square foot building with exciting exhibits, programs, and experiences. Specific features and attractions of the pop-up Museum will include:

Daily panels in the Museum theater, organized by Comic-Con.  Four panels per day will give the broader community a taste of the great variety and depth of Comic-Con programming. Full details will be announced as we reveal the complete Comic-Con programming schedule.

Mondo Gallery: 80 Years of Batman, the first ever traveling exhibit from the Mondo Gallery in Austin, Texas, celebrating the history of Batman through 19 iconic and fan-favorite comic-book covers, reproduced as screen-printed posters.

The Con

After the program the droids made it back to the convention center, which was awesome that the center provided handicap transportation for us and the droid!!!!! Per usual we wander around aimlessly … we did actually make it to the Brian Rood Art booth to hang out with our droid builder buddy and mooch some power for the MSE. Check out Brian Rood Art —- great star wars art! Ate some ok convention pizza and nachos and that was about it!

Summary

This was Scums first attendance of Comic Con Revolution Ontario! We will be back! Such a great smaller sized con. We were able to interact with everyone in smaller groups and it was just chill and fun! We ran into our buddies Mandalorian Mercs and Saberguild and got to hang out a bit. The event center was clean and had easy access to some yummy food trucks parked outside.

The Transformer voice guy was there doing pix and autographs. haha not a big transformer fan I guess… I didn’t have cable when that toon was on…

A highlight was meeting Colin Cantwell and getting his signature on his deathstar concept model. Also got a pic with him and chatted a little. Very nice gentleman! He seemed to get a kick out of the droids :) Mr. Cantwell was one of the first George Lucas got to work on “The Star Wars” back in the day. He designed many ships and prototype models via “kitbashing.” A really awesome technique an one that gives Star Wars that unique look. Taking random pieces and putting it together to make a different piece. So cool. It was hard picking a photo for him to sign, ultimately I went with the DeathStar :) Great story behind it too. One that we can all relate to as builders. Apparently he purchased a styrene sphere to model put the 2 pieces of it didn’t line up right and would take a lot of work to adjust it and make it look like a perfect circle. Mr. Cantwell suggest to George to have the trench run along the middle of it to avoid all that work. George agreed to it after thinking it over and thus the birth of the deathstar trench ! other ships of his design was the YWing, Tie figher, star destroyer, land speeder, sandcrawler and millennium falcon. Always a pleasure meeting anyone working on or has worked on the movies.

Cosplays of the day were Joe Dirt and his meteorite, little poison ivy, baby Han Solo with remote control millenium falcon and TV head!

There was a nice presence of star cars as well! The batmobile was AMAZING ! !

We also had fun with Zany Jr! Instagram & Facebook. She does fun con videos involving cosplayers. We preteneded like Krank drove the MSE droid with gopro camera into the womens bathroom and I came out all mad with the droid haha it was ridiculous and awesome! Give her a follow !

This was Scums 2nd Wonder Con! Really fun con and not as intimidating as San Diego. We slacked on purchasing tickets this year so Saturday sold out. Sunday flew by! We wondered around a bit and andventured outside to the Hilton to avoid the food truck lines for lunch (thank you Aare). Mostly we hung around the fan tables of the 501st Legion, Rebel Legion, Mandalorian Mercs, Droid Builders & MSE Builders booths.

The Rebel Legion Sunrider Base had a super amazing Endor Bunker setup for photo opportunities and the 501st had their awesome space walls!

Arcade Expo 5.0 [T37]

Desert Scum joined HeyJohnny5 and 1.21 Giga Watt Guys @ the Arcade Expo 5.0 at the Museum of Pinball Banning, CA March 16, 2019

arcadeexpo.png

Saturday March 16, 2018

Arcade Expo 5.0

Scum was overjoyed to be able to return to the magnificent Museum of Pinball !! Such an amazing place for video game & pinball lovers. The concept of all-day free play of over 1000+ games is still something we are getting used to. At $55 dollars a day it is well worth it if you put your time in. The museum also has on-site food selections such as fresh cheeseburgers, fries, mini pizza, tots etc. and inside a beer garden for your beer & mixed drinks with . There was a swap meet on the side of the building, which we missed, and various vendors selling pins, patches etc. outside. The theater had a schedule of presentations and documentaries showing throughout the day. Also occurring throughout the weekend was KongOff7, which included scheduled high-score battles and head to head single elimination battles!

Summary

We had the pleasure of hanging out with the Time Machine from Back to the Future thanks to 1.21GigagWattGuys over on Facebook and Johnny 5 from Short Circuit thanks to HeyJohnny5 on Facebook! You can contact the 1.21 Giga Watt Guys for their next event or to maybe schedule them for yours! Love hanging out with these iconic figures and their owners!

We also met Billy Mitchell and got some pix with him and the droids. Billy is a well high score holder and competitor for games like Donkey Kong Jr., Mrs. Pacman, BurgerTime and Centipede and was participating in the KongOff.

The Arcade Expo had a much higher attendance than Pinball Madness last fall. The parking lot and entire street block was full! You will have to wait in line a bit for certain games or machines.

Huge shoutout to all the volunteer technicians that participate in the events.

Tips

If you attend one of the events at the Museum of Pinball dress accordingly. I know Southern California weather can be a bit unpredictable in the Spring, so layers is suggested. The Pinball and Arcade areas can get a bit stuffy no matter the weather outside and outside can get chilly. You can access your car and re-enter the event as long as you have your wristband so you can store water & clothes if need be.

If you are going to buy food or drink at the event, be sure to get in the right line. You have to purchase tickets to redeem food and drink. The bar takes cash/card.
